Food of the Month: Pancakes

Posted on 04/04/2022 by FTB

Everyone has had a delicious pancake at one time or another. Not only in America, different types of pancakes are eaten, but many countries have their version of the pancake. In some countries, Pancake Day is even celebrated! Therefore, the food of the month this month is Pancakes.

  • WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

Although many countries now have their own version of the pancake, the original recipe consists simply of buckwheat flour and wheat flour. Because the original recipe is so simple, it is difficult to determine where the pancake actually originated. What we do know is that the oldest recipe from a cookbook was found in 1439. However, food historians believe that the first simple pancake originated back in the Stone Age. The recipe then consisted of flour, egg, and water, and was baked on a hot stone. The first stories about the pancake in Europe originated in the 12th century when the crusaders brought the recipe from Asia to Europe. The main ingredient then was buckwheat flour. The first pancake mix was only invented in America in 1889.

  • HOW AND WHEN DO YOU EAT A PANCAKE?

We are going to have a discussion. How and when do you eat a pancake? The whole world has its own way and ideas on this subject. In America, we have our own version of the pancake. This is a thicker, smaller, and airier variant than European pancakes. Germans cut pancakes into strips and add this to their soup, while some countries in Scandinavia add fruit and whipped cream. Not to mention the French version, the crêpe, a thin variant with layers of chocolate on top of it. In addition, when you're supposed to eat pancakes also varies by country. In America, they are eaten for breakfast, while in Europe it is eaten as a main course. In Australia, this is not done, and it belongs as a dessert.
