Plastic Consumption in Food Trucks: What can we do about it?

Posted on 01/20/2022 by FTB

If anyone depends on plastic, it's a Food Truck. Plastic cups, bags, straws, containers, cutlery, etc. And especially in times of the coronavirus, where mostly to-go is served. Plastic is a convenient and easy way to serve your dishes, but if it is so sustainable ...? We must try to fight together for more sustainability. In this blog, we discuss possible solutions.

  • POST-PLASTIC

At Foodtruckbooking, we believe that Americans are becoming more and more initiated in reducing the consumption of plastic. Especially among young people, we see that many of them are becoming more aware of their plastic consumption. Still, every year about 10 million tons of waste end up in our oceans. Almost 75% of this is plastic.

To give our FoodTruck a modern flair and make ourselves useful to the ecological movement, we share with you some spearheads on the topic of plastic! Besides doing your part for the environment, reducing plastic is also a good marketing strategy.

    POST-PLASTIC
  • INNOVATIVE PACKAGING

In sales, we, the owners of Food Trucks, have a say in how much plastic is used. Plastic is ideal for the food industry because it does not allow air and moisture through. Many alternatives are not user-friendly or expensive. Still, we want to encourage everyone to think about alternative packaging. Don't choose the easy and cheap option: plastic.

For innovative packaging, you can think as crazy as you can! Think of paper made from potato skins, drinking straws made of glass, cardboard, or steel, edible bowls made from apples. Would something like this be suitable for your Food Truck?

  • BETTER PLASTIC

Sometimes plastic consumption is unavoidable, but try to choose the "better" plastic. Better plastics are recycled and recyclable plastics. By buying post-consumer recycled material (PCR), we keep plastic in the system and out of the environment. We are using more and more recycled plastic, and, according to Unilever, PCR material now makes up about 11% of our plastic footprint. Together, we can get this number up!

  • RECYCLE

Whether we use plastic or not, we always produce waste. The key to achieving sustainability is how to recycle this waste. Much of the waste we generate can have a second life and boost the circular economy. The circular economy is based on the premise that everything is reusable and recyclable.
