Upcycling: A Food Truck Trend with Potential

Posted on 11/02/2021 by Redactie

In celebration of the start of the Glasgow Climate Conference, we're going to talk about upcycled food in this blog! According to Forbes, upcycled food is "The Coolest Trend You've Probably Never Heard Of". Especially for foodies

  • HOW IT STARTED

According to data from Spoonshot, a data analytics company, interest in upcycling in business media has increased by 128% in the past year - after all, waste prevention offers economic benefits. Upcycling can be of interest to large companies such as supermarkets or restaurant chains. Ultimately, the more food you "upcycle," the greater the economic benefit; but FoodTrucks are also well within the trend. 6% of all global greenhouse gas emissions are caused by food loss and waste, and conscious products can do a lot of good.

    HOW IT STARTED
  • UPCYCLING?

What is upcycling? Recycling, which involves reclaiming a substance so that it can once again fulfill its original purpose. With "upcycling," materials are transformed into new materials that have expanded uses. In relation to food, upcycling food is not deforming leftover food. The practice is to use parts of the food produced as by-products to make really good, tasty meals! As an example: Cashews have a shell that is not normally marketed by the supplier. You can make delicious meals with them that are also very healthy! Or to use the leaves of a bunch of carrots in soup. Our grandmothers may have done it, but now it is upcycling. It can be equated with recycling.

  • GET INVOLVED!

Upcycling is very sustainable, but you also have to be able to market it well. A waste pesto, for example, is famous because you can make a spread with many things. But there is still room for improvement! If you have original ideas for upcycling, send them to us at [email protected] - we'd love to post them on our social media channels!
